14-4’S WEEKLY WRAP – WK 14

Unfortunately the start of the game today was delayed due to only one umpire showing up. Peta Beron from ERNA filled in which lifted the umpiring standard to a whole new level. This was a real positive for us, given we now go straight into the Grand Final, this will be the grand final standard umpiring we will have and need to play to.

Our previous games against the Ravens have been close encounters so our strategy today was to try and win each quarter. Both team’s defence was outstanding which resulted in the low scoring match which the Ravens won 10 – 8.

The whole game was close with Comets winning the first qtr 2- 1, Lia scoring our 2 goals. The second qtr was 2 – 2 (Lia 1 / JoJo 1) so we were up by 1 at half-time : Comets 4 – Ravens 3.

The Ravens defence kept reducing our scoring opportunities and pressuring our shooters who were unfortunately a bit off target today. We turned over a lot of ball in the front third but conversely, we caused a lot of turn-over ball in their front third. We only managed 1 goal in the 3rd qtr against the Ravens 3 goals giving them a 1 goal lead at the last break. Comets 5 – Ravens 6.

The Comets didn’t give in with big efforts by everyone. Mel, who has been in top shooting form recently, landed her fist goal to get us back even and Rachel intercepted her heart out. Lucy pushed nicely into space giving good go-forward ball earning her the other team’s selection for MVP award. Lia scored 2 more for the Comets.

The Ravens worked especially hard to get through Verity’s, Katherine and Anna’s defence and managed to score 4 goals. Hard to single out but Verity had a great game with strong passes all day earning her the Coach’s award.

Although we lost, and are no longer undefeated, this doesn’t matter. It was a really good game for us and one to learn from. The Ravens play a very physical game and muscled us out of the play a bit hence, I was really proud how the girls kept at them. JoJo keeps improving as our super-sub playing 3 different positions.

Well done today ladies and thanks again to Leisha and Gill for their sideline checks, balances and photo organisation.
