14-4’S GRAND FINAL WRAP

Whilst somewhat belated, I wanted to write a final weekly-wrap for the 14-4’s who narrowly missed out on winning their grand final by just 2 goals to the Gladesville Ravens : Score 22 – 24.

The Ravens started off 1st quarter not missing a trick, landing  8 of the 9 goals they went for. The Comets took some time to warm into the game and find our range but once into it, we clawed back five goals to go into the break 5 – 8 (Mel 2 goals / Lia 3 goals).

The girl’s positive attitude was impressive knowing they had to win the 2nd qtr to get back into the game and win they did. Lia landed 6 goals and super-sub JoJo 2 goals against the Ravens’ 6 to go into half-time 13 – 14, only 1 goal down. Rachel and Lucy were playing close to if not season-best games and the defensive trio of Anna, Katherine and Verity were up to their fantastic feats troubling the Raven’s shooters constantly.

The Raven’s play a physical game and facing back into the sun the 3rd quarter, the Raven’s upped the anti muscling us out of the rhythm we had found the last quarter.  The defence and centre-court on both teams worked overtime to reduce the available scoring shots with the Ravens managing 5 goals and the Comets 3 for a score of Comets 16 – Ravens 19.

So with the hooter starting the 4th quarter and to the waving of Comets banners, sounds of shouts and cheers from the Comets supporters, on we went needing a super effort to win the quarter by 4 goals. The girls jumped for rebounds, lept for intercepts, firmed up their passes and pushed beautifully down court for Lia and Mel to add 6 goals to our score. Mel landing 4 goals in quick succession and an exhausted Lia 2 goals. Unfortunately the Ravens managed 5 of their own to win 24 – 22.

So with heads held high the ladies left the court on Saturday, sang the Comets song with gusto knowing they gave it their all but just couldn’t get there this year. Congratulations to the Ravens.

So what were the upsides:

1)      Sportsperson ship – the team are a pleasure to coach because they have a fantastic attitude to playing netball and whilst I’m sure were a little disappointed, the thrill of being in a grand final was its own reward.

2)      Improvement – just think back a few years and to how far you have come. Say no more.

3)      Parents, friends and siblings – a big thankyou. Without your commitment the girls couldn’t play.

4)      Managers – Gillian and Leisha – your sideline checks and balances make it easy for me to coach and don’t go un-noticed. A special big thank you.

5)      Committee – it was fantastic to see you there supporting the girls so thank you.

And to the end of a great 2010 season that’s the wrap……….. thank you ladies for a super year.
